A new summer student

It is shaping up to be a very busy and productive summer!

Huiyao Chen, an undergrad from Fudan University in Shanghai, China, will be joining our group on July 1. Huiyao’s visit will be funded by a Mitacs Globalink Fellowship. Welcome, Huiyao!

Visit from Leo Kadanoff

Visit from Leo Kadanoff

Leo Kadanoff from the University of Chicago is visiting Western this week. He gave a public talk Tuesday evening and a Theoretical Physics Seminar yesterday. He is giving a third talk in the Philosophy Department on Friday. Leo spent this afternoon visiting our lab in the Physics and Astronomy Department and chatting with members of our research group. We had a interesting and wide-ranging discussion that covered not only our current research, but topics such as the mathematical description of the universe and employment prospects for physicists. In the photo are (l-r) Jamal Sahkr, Maryam Mozaffari, Dan Stranges, Grace Ge, Cameron Hopkins, John de Bruyn, and Leo Kadanoff. Photo by Henry Leparskas.

New group members

I’m excited that undergraduates Brian Duong and Saied Sorkhou will be joining our research group in May. Brain was awarded an NSERC Undergrad Student Research Award (USRA) for the summer, and Saied an Advanced Materials and Biomaterials Interdisciplinary (AMBI) Undergrad Research Award. Congratulations to both! Saied will be co-supervised by Beth Gillies from Chemistry.

I’m also very pleased that Cameron Hopkins has decided to continue working in our group for his graduate studies. Cameron is currently frantically writing his fourth-year thesis, which is on a problem in non-Newtonian fluid dynamics. He will morph into a grad student in May.
